It Take Two
It takes two to see into a heart.
One to look.
The other to open the window.
It takes two for trust.
To value actions over words.
Meaning over a promise.
Failure over perfection.
To recognize trust needs to be built, one brick at a time.
It takes two to understand each has a past.
Respect the importance of who each of you are,
in relation to the past.
Leave the past where it belongs.
See the unique people you’ve become because of your past.
Not broken.
Wear and tear in life has worn your fabric,
But it makes you who you are.
Accept your differences as treasures.
It takes two to be honest.
One to fearlessly speak truth.
The other to validate.
To check that both understand.
Be unafraid to say, “There’s an elephant in the room.”
It takes two to learn and unlearn.
To embrace the other with an open mind.
To accept it’s a process to learn about each other.
Preconceived ideas about the other,
will only slow down and hinder your progress.
It takes two to hear each other.
To really listen (Let silence be the words sometimes)
One to speak, the other to listen, sometimes with all five senses.
To really listen to the joy or pain behind the words.
To clarify meaning and intention in the exchange is paramount.
Leave nothing to mind reading and guess work.
It takes two to foster kindness and love.
Bestow and receive.
Not with an expectation or rule, but a genuine exchange of love.
It takes two to accept nothing will ever stay the same.
The map will always be open for the journey.
Invest energy and time,
In order for your paths to intersect when possible.
Be ready for goodbyes.
For apart times.
But, cinch the together times.
It takes two when you decide to paint a room.
One holds black, the other white.
Be ready to mix them.
Gray becomes the color of the room.
The richness of grey will strengthen you.
You can learn to compromise.
Allow the teeter-totter to fall both ways.
It takes two to forgive.
One to acknowledge the hurt and ask forgiveness.
The other to see the validity of the hurt.
With no blame or shame,
wisdom can shed light on your imperfections.
To help uncover and heal the hurt.
It humbles you.
Remember you will be on the receiving end of forgiveness.
In another leg of your journey together,
Your roles will reverse.
It takes two to negotiate how to share your life.
Both charged to foster your own interests and passions,
Apart from the other.
With a pact to continue to merge your lives together.
With prospect of the shares you’ve invested,
Giving you plenty for the future.
It takes super powers! |
