Letter From Mother Who Lugged Her Teenager to Hear Harry Belafonte Speak
I received this letter, via e-mail, today from the mother who "Lugged" her son to the lecture on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I wanted my readers to hear the story, it's an amazing, inspiring one.
I included the picture of them, again.
Below is the letter from Angela, and her son who now speaks Chinese.
Thank you, Angela, for letting me share this story of yours.
Hello there,
The pictures are lovely. Please feel free to blog the story and show the picture.
My story is while my husband worked in another state and I was alone with a baby in graduate school, Chinese students let their visiting parents take care of my baby. They took care of him for free as long as I was in school. Upon their urging, I enrolled my son in Chinese school on the weekend for 1year, received tutoring for him the next year and then allowed them to help me find a job in Beijing. My son and I lived in Beijing for 1 year and he became fluent in Chinese within 7 months.
That was about eight years ago. He's the 18 year old hugging me in this picture. I am proud that he has kept his Chinese and I was so proud that he got up on this day to hear Harry Belafonte who was truly inspiring. Please have your readers visit www.globallinkchina.org to read more about my son and how his Chinese fluency inspired the opening of Global Link China, a company that specializes in low cost trips for students to experience full language and cultural immersion in China.
Thank you
Angela Hicks, Ed.D.
Director, Global Link China
